Fly on the Ceiling: How To Develop Insect-Inspired Adhesives?

Why the fly does not fall from the ceiling? Animals bear adhesive systems of extreme quality to attach to various surfaces including plants.

Their mystery is in the structure and material properties of the strongly specialized foot surfaces. Modern high resolution methods allowed imaging of these surfaces down to the nanometer scale and their micromechanical analysis. This information is not only of strong academic interest, but also of high importance for the development of bio-inspired surfaces for future applications ranging from the sticky tape to the walking robots.
