Fully saturated with Zn(II) ions metallothionein (MT) forms Zn7MT complex. Seventh Zn(II) ion bound to metallothionein (in light blue) is considered as loosely bound and responds for unique Zn(II) buffering properties of metallothionein. This properties allow this protein to act as a donor and an acceptor of Zn(II) ions, and to maintain Zn(II) ions homeostasis in a cell
